1929 Ford Model A Phaeton
From the Bryant Collection is this repatriated 1929 Ford Phaeton. The car was originally shipped to Argentina from the factory as a right-hand drive and saw nearly 8 decades of continuous service. In fact, it was driven onto the transport ship by the previous owner for its trip back to the US. It was brought back to the US in 2007 through the port of New York and delivered to Bangor, Maine for a complete restoration.
The restoration was performed by McKinney Restorations over the course of 4 years with nearly every component on the vehicle being replaced. It was thoroughly disassembled and the floors and cross members were replaced. The remainder of the body and fenders were straightened and massaged and save a few minor patches, are all original to the car.
The driveline was examined and it was determined that due to it’s extensive use, replacement was warranted. A matching replacement was located from a 1930 with less than 1,000 miles on a recent rebuild. The original rear axle was retained with all internal being replaced. In addition to this work, the car was changed over to left hand drive (all components to convert it back to right hand drive are included in the sale. Fortunately, this transformation can be completed without any modifications to the body).
The upholstery and top were replaced to a high level in Argentina and still wear the tags of the company that performed the work. The upholstery shows no wear, scuffs or holes. The frame of the top was not serviced as part of the restoration and while it is still in fine condition, it is starting to show light surface rust. The top is in very good condition with no tears or holes.
Paint is in deep burgundy and black. The undercarriage components and frame are finished on a satin black as would be expected. The body and fenders all flow correctly with no ripples or waves present. The paint also shows no scuffs, scratches or chips and is overall in fine condition. All chrome and brightwork has been replaced inside and out to include: bumper, radiator housing, handles, levers, lights, etc. The electrical system has also been completely redone.
The amount of care and money put into the restoration of this Model A is clearly evident in the overall appearance and reliability of the vehicle. Great pains have been taken to ensure a top notch and reliable vehicle. IAA performed the photography and while not having a 6 volt battery, three of us were able to push start the car quite easily. This vehicle would be perfect for anyone wanting an A with absolutely no compromises.
