1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible

1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible

This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL is presented in fresh Wimbledon White over Red interior.  The car began life 55 years ago in the Midwest and eventually became part of a Eureka, Arkansas church’s extensive collection.  When the government took issue with collection’s tax-exempt status, the car became embroiled in a lengthy eight-year legal battle.

When the dust settled after nearly a decade of bickering and legal wrangling, the car finally moved on in 2014 to its current home on a Kentucky horse farm.  The new owner then completed a frame on restoration to bring the car to high level we see today.

The body of the was shot in the correct Wimbledon White on the car’s all original sheet metal.  The color is best described as a very light cream which compliments the red interior nicely. No patches, panels, or repairs were required of the rust free body and no old repairs were evident.  The current owner did indicate that one bumper dent was repaired and the original rear glass was replaced.

Under the hood is where we see the majority of the upgrades to the car.  The original 390, wearing 92,000 original miles, was upgraded with the highest performing engine for ‘64, a 427 side oiler. This is backed up by the reliable and original Cruise-O-Matic transmission and rear end driving the original wheels and hub caps. The remainder of the undercarriage was also serviced and brought up to snuff to create a comfortable and safe weekend driver.

The pristine engine and exterior match up wonderfully with this Galaxie’s interior.  The factory XL package for ’64 included enhanced trim, a center console and of course, bucket seats  which are all presented here in their original state and show no scuffs, scratches or holes.  The interior has been kept original condition such as; seat covers, rugs, floor mats, trim, headliner, convertible top, foot controls, and even an AM-FM radio with all dials gauges and switches functioning properly and show minimal wear.

There is nothing to say but good things in this Galaxie! It has been well cared for, only being exercised 500 miles since completion. With a refreshed exterior, well executed engine swap that is correct for both the model and year, as well as the original interior we at Iron Age would consider this show car worthy!
