1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427/390

1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427/390

One of three ‘60s Corvettes offered from a private collection, this ’69 427/390 is a verified numbers matching, Restored Original that was been painstakingly refreshed in 2005 to be an outstanding example of a car restored to retain the highest level of originality.

The car was located for the owner by renowned Corvette restorer and NCRS certified judge Goodwin Hannaford of Hollis, Maine. After he thoroughly researched the vehicle’s authenticity, consulted on the purchase Mr. Hannaford performed a complete frame on restoration in 2006 to bring the vehicle to the highest level of originality possible.

The car was returned to the correct Monza Red over original Black vinyl. The exterior of the vehicle shows excellent fit and finish with truly flawless paint.

With an eye to originality, the pot metal louvers with some flaws were polished and reinstalled as well as the added lake pipes were removed and a correct NOS exhaust system was installed. The original left rear turn signal, showing a small crack in the center was retained. The balance of the trim and chrome is in very good condition.

The interior is original to the car. The gauges, switches, and controls all function properly.  Cosmetically, the original console does show a light patina of a half century old car which again, the owner chose to retain. The owner indicates that he insisted that the seat surfaces be sent out to be refurbished at great expense in leu of a simple replacement. The rugs were sacrificed and as would be expected with this level of restoration, black Al Knoch replacements were installed.

As with the other members of the collections, the vehicle was purchased as an investment. The engine and drivetrain were thoroughly scoped, inspected, and fluids analyzed prior to purchase. The original 427/390 engine sends power through its numbers matching 4 speed to the rear differential and on to the original and cosmetically perfect wheels.

In addition to replacing the seals and gaskets in the drivetrain, all major components were serviced and where necessary, OEM and NOS components were used to return them to as new condition. We also see the desire to maintain originality under the bonnet with the patina of many good years demonstrated by a few mechanic’s dings on the valve covers and the original Turbo-Jet air cleaner decals still present.

An impeccably executed replacement of the soft top was performed with a level of detail that includes the original factory warning tag (see pictures). The original hard top is also present and included in the sale.

With the care and attention shown in the original work by Mr. Hannaford, it goes without saying that mechanically, the vehicle is flawless with no reported or observed leaks or issues. All dials, switches, gauges and controls function correctly. This vehicle represents an excellent example of a restoration completed with originality in mind and would make a perfect weekend driver, local show car, or fine addition to any collection.
